Born in 1991, David Muwanguzi is a dedicated chess administrator, titled instructor, and long-time contributor to Ugandan chess. He was elected Treasurer of the Uganda Chess Federation in December 2025, serving a four-year term (2025–2029) under President Andrew Nkwasibwe Bakiza.
Chess Career and Playing Strength
A competitive player since his teenage years, Muwanguzi rose through the ranks with clubs like Mulago Rooks and later Kireka A Chess Club. He has consistently performed at a high level in Uganda’s domestic scene, including the National Chess League and various open tournaments.
His current FIDE Classical rating stands at 2075, with a peak that reflects years of active play against Uganda’s top talents. He has represented Uganda in team events and contributed to strong performances in the Africa Online Chess League alongside players like FM Walter Okas.
Administrative and Coaching Roles
Muwanguzi brings extensive federation experience to the Treasurer position. He previously served as Publicity Secretary and in other executive roles, demonstrating deep institutional knowledge and commitment to the sport’s growth.
In 2018, he earned his FIDE Instructor license, enabling him to formally train and develop upcoming players. He has been actively involved in organizing and supporting major national events, including school chess championships and the landmark 17th Africa Youth Chess Championship hosted in Entebbe in 2026, where he contributed to logistics.
As Treasurer, his responsibilities include managing the federation’s finances, ensuring transparent resource allocation, supporting grassroots programs, and helping secure funding for junior development, Olympiad preparations, and national tournaments.

Muwanguzi is known for his versatility, financial acumen, and passion for promoting chess at all levels — from schools to elite competition. He has participated in events such as Father Grimes National Schools Chess Championships and supporting youth teams internationally.
