Born in 1988, Mathias Ssonko Allan stands as one of Uganda’s most respected and influential figures in chess. A bridge between the country’s playing heritage and its ambitious future. As the current National Chess Coach of the Uganda Chess Federation (UCF), he is the architect behind a rising generation of young talents who are putting Ugandan chess on the African map.

Ssonko’s journey began on the board as a fierce competitor. He represented Uganda at the 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromsø, Norway, earning valuable experience against some of the world’s strongest players. His peak FIDE Classical rating reached 2187, with solid performances across classical, rapid, and blitz formats (current ratings: ~2084 Classical, 2056 Rapid, 2071 Blitz).

One of his standout individual victories came in 2018 when he dominated the Rwanda Genocide Memorial Chess Championship, scoring an impressive 6.5/7 to claim the title. He has also been a regular contender in East African events, known for his deep preparation, stamina, and strategic understanding.

In 2016, Ssonko earned his FIDE Instructor license, marking the beginning of his formal coaching career. Nearly a decade later, in early 2026, he achieved the higher FIDE Trainer (FT) license, a significant milestone that recognizes his expertise and commitment to structured player development.

As National Coach, Ssonko has worked closely with Uganda’s junior and senior teams, including at zonal championships and the landmark 17th Africa Youth Chess Championship (AYCC) hosted in Entebbe in May 2026. Under his guidance, Uganda delivered a powerhouse performance, finishing second overall in the medal table. Stars like Alvin Muhirwa (U-16 Gold + FM title) have benefited directly from his training.

Ssonko’s coaching style goes far beyond opening theory and endgame technique. He emphasizes life lessons through chess — strategy, resilience, decision-making under pressure, and personal growth. In interviews and training sessions, he often speaks about building not just strong players, but disciplined, confident individuals ready for challenges both on and off the board.

By profession, Ssonko is a Valuation Surveyor, bringing the same analytical precision and patience he applies to real estate into his chess work. He has coached at various academies, including Chess Life Academy and CNA Chess Club, and remains deeply involved in grassroots development through school programs and summer camps.

His vision includes establishing accredited chess academies in Uganda and continuing to professionalize the sport nationally. He is vocal about the need for better infrastructure, more titled coaches, and sustained federation support to produce Uganda’s first Grandmasters.
