Peninah Esther Nannozi
is a dynamic and passionate leader whose work has significantly advanced chess in Uganda, with a special focus on empowering women and girls. She currently serves as Assistant Director for Chess Development at the Uganda Chess Federation (2025–2029 term), where she drives initiatives to expand participation, support talent pathways, and promote inclusive growth of the sport nationwide.


Championing Women in Chess

Peninah is widely recognized as one of the leading forces behind the Queens of Chess Rapid Tournaments, a flagship initiative she has helped organize and sustain for over five years. These women-only events have created vital platforms for female players to compete, gain confidence, develop skills, and progress to higher-level competitions. Through her leadership, mentorship, and resource mobilization, many young girls and women have found opportunities in chess that extend far beyond the board.


She plays a key role in the Women in Chess Uganda initiative and serves prominently in the Uganda Women Chess Association, consistently advocating for greater female representation and support structures within the sport.


Chess Profile and Contributions

A FIDE-rated player (FIDE ID: 10004645), Peninah has competed in national tournaments and qualifiers, including the Uganda Ladies Olympiad Qualifiers. While she now focuses primarily on organization, coaching, and development, her playing background gives her deep insight into the needs of athletes.


As a Chess Coach and Tournament Organizer, she excels at planning and delivering high-quality events. She has secured sponsorships and partnerships that have enhanced the sustainability and reach of chess tournaments in Uganda. Her work was instrumental in the success of various editions of the Queens of Chess tournaments and other women-focused initiatives.


Professional Expertise

Beyond chess, Peninah is a seasoned Events Professional with extensive experience in event planning, management, and styling. She is known for creating memorable, well-executed experiences through creativity, strategic planning, and meticulous attention to detail.


She is also an accomplished Florist and entrepreneur, specializing in elegant floral arrangements for weddings, corporate events, and special occasions. Professionally, she works as a Senior Research Associate and Economist, bringing strong research, analytical, and project management skills to her leadership roles.


Vision and Impact


Peninah Esther Nannozi believes chess is a powerful vehicle for personal transformation — building confidence, strategic thinking, discipline, and leadership, especially among girls and women. In her role as Assistant Director for Chess Development, she continues to focus on grassroots expansion, school programs, talent identification, and creating sustainable structures that will produce more champions and lifelong chess enthusiasts.
