About Us
The Uganda Chess Federation (UCF) is the official governing body for chess in Uganda and a proud member of the African Chess Confederation (ACC) and FIDE, the international chess federation. We unite players, clubs, schools, and enthusiasts from across the nation in the pursuit of excellence, growth, and the transformative power of chess.
Our Slogan:
Come Let's Reason Together
This guiding principle drives everything we do. With strong, transparent management, robust funding partnerships, and a focus on developing world-class players, the UCF is building a sustainable future for chess in Uganda.
Our History
The UCF traces its roots to 1972, when a group of passionate Ugandans — including founding figures like Paul Bitarabeho, Lawrence Kapanga, and Dr. Yusuf Mpairwe formed the Chess Association of Uganda amid the global excitement of the Fischer-Spassky World Championship. It later became the Uganda Chess Federation, affiliating with the National Council of Sports in 1973 and joining FIDE in 1978 as the first federation in East Africa to do so.
Over the decades, we have grown from a small community of enthusiasts into a dynamic national organization that has represented Uganda at numerous World Chess Olympiads and continental events, while nurturing talent at grassroots and elite levels.
